I think it would be better if you had the MAC Address of the Laptop. Since
the network card, and wireless card, have a MAC Address assigned by the
manufacturer you could do a search to see if that MAC Address shows up on
the Internet. But Micheal is right, you probably would need a Level 1 ISP to
help you see if that laptop shows up by putting a 'sniffer' on the Net. The
'theft-tracking' software would also help. The company who puts out that
software would keep track of the MAC Address. If that laptop is reported
stolen, they could track it via the Net. Even if the hard drive is wiped,
replaced, and a different OS is put on it, they would 'see' it because of
the MAC Address.

Now, if you have DHCP running on your network on a server, I would go and
look up the computer name, in DHCP, find out what the IP Address was
assigned to it, and what the MAC Address that DHCP has as a reference. Once
you have the MAC Address, I would look up companies who help in recovery of
stolen equipment.

I am only assuming that the laptop was directly connected to your network
via a physical connection. It the laptop was connected via a docking
station, and that docking station has a dedicated network card, then DHCP
probably would reference the MAC Address of the docking station. If the
laptop was connected via the wireless card, then you can still get the MAC
Address from DHCP.

If anyone has anything to add to this, please clarify. It has been awhile
since I have done this.
