DDE issues are the bane of my existence! Had a bunch of my machines once
have issues with DDE, causing a huge lag when opening office files (Like 2
minutes). I VM'd 3 affected machines and sent them to MS PSS, they had
about 3 techs working on finding the issue/resolution.

They could not solve it. They refunded my money. Meh.

Thanks for sharing.

Sam

Subject: Head-busting Word issue

Been beating my head against a Word problem all day and thought I would
share it in case anyone else has the same problem.

Couldn't open any .doc or .docx files by double-clicking them directly - got
an error of "there was an error sending the command to the program". Opening
Word first, and then choosing File | Open, worked without issue.

After much fruitless searching and testing of various apparently useful
solutions, found a reference to changing these Registry keys

Rename HKCR\Word.Document.12\shell\open\ddeexec to ddeexec.old
Rename HKCR\Word.Document.12\shell\open\command\command to command.old
Modify HKCR\Word.Document.12\shell\open\command\(Default) so that /dde at
the end of the data is replaced with "%1%"

Rename HKCR\Word.Document.8\shell\open\ddeexec to ddeexec.old
Rename HKCR\Word.Document.8\shell\open\command\command to command.old
Modify HKCR\Word.Document.8\shell\open\command\(Default) so that /dde at the
end of the data is replaced with "%1%"

This seems to work where everything else, including a full Repair install of
MS Office 2007, appears to have failed.
