Theoretically, you could lose half your drives without failure with RAID1...but they need to be the "right" half.

(33% for 3 drives, 25% for 4 drives, 10% for 10 drives, 5% for 20 drives etc.) The larger the number of spindles in your RAID5 array, the less space you lose. RAID1 performs better though. Both arrays can lose a single drive without failure. So you need to weigh up whether you need perf or space.
