It's a feature of BofA's Online Banking called ShopSafe, super easy to manage, takes a few extra seconds but I know that the number is useless to anyone else once the vendor verifies it. You can see all the past or active numbers easily in the little interface they provide. It's also nice for recurring payments like my Dish bill where I get a discount for autopay but don't want to give them a "real" bank account or CC #. Other banks have similar implementations.
