I was the one who chimed in with my dissatisfaction with DD-WRT bridge mode. It may be they have fixed this but at the time it was definitly broken and weirdly implented and while this was not in their docs, there were several threads in their forums about it not working. This was a little while ago too. I know several other variations were just getting popular at the time. I have not tested them, one person mentioned Tomato which did not support the hardware I was using at that time. Since I am revisting my setup and looking around for new hardware this is a timely thread.
We built our own cantenna's (used baby forumala cans which were the right size) and they worked 'ok'. In the end we found some nice inexpensive 24db antenna's for $50/pair which worked significantly better then our home brew ones.
