That also depends on the version of the pst file. If it's created in outlook 2007 it will be in unicode format and it should not suffer from the 2GB limit like the older ones do. For 2007 the default limit is 20 GB, but it can be changed.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/832925 I would check the rules for the autoarchiving. Maybe expired emails are being deleted? Also any folder can have different autoarchive settings.
