So..... Do you have an application and dependancies mapping? Because you are going to need that before you get a shut down order sequence thing going. If you don't have one, then now is the time to get one and shovel in 'application owners (primary and secondary contacts) for each one (not you for the most part) and then maintain that list every six months (it's useful for more things).
You can do the 'least/most important' dance too, you will find out everything is important to somebody and if you get into a 'shutdown' decisian you are into everything is going down territory usually anyway by the time someone decides to do it. We run a mixed environment, Windows, UNIX, Mainframe (physical/virtual) so we have some broad categories. 1. Application front end and databases 2. Middle teir (generally between front end and databases) - only a few of these 3. Databses 4. Access control/Networking/ dns dhcp /etc 5. Domain controllers 6. VMWare hosts Reverse order to bring up. We have SCCM collections these are in and use a deployed package to bring them down if we have to. It might have been faster to shutdown through VMWare :) PS:> Get-VM | Shutdown-VMGuest Have fun.
