Thank you to all who responded and offered advice!

I'm pretty sure I have it.  I didn't force a reboot when composing my SMS
package.  And since a couple of the updates affected IE, it required a
reboot (which I didn't supply).  DUH!!!

I can't reboot now to see if that solves the problem (the servers are
production and not allowed to restart until after hours.)
