If it is just a workgroup, it is OK, but if it domain based, then AD
integration is a must.  I've got a small office that thought it would be fun
to put in their own NAS (dlink) and they are now "enjoying" logging into the
device every time they want to access files.  What a pain.  Since then I've
built a QNAp with iSCSI functionality...attached to a server.  makes things
much easier.
