We seem to forget that our IT jobs have been historically loathed by other
departments within business because they have taken away work that used to
be done manually.

This is not some new thing.  Each technology advance has led to a
*displacement* of work.  Work moves from some area to some
new/different area.  Many of those in the old area who have or develop
new skills, are able to transition, those who don't are not, and some
new people arise from elsewhere with the skills and get work.

It's a cycle that IT has benefited from more than most, and the rules
are still the same:  Regularly acquire new skills, or get left
out/behind.   You can't control your destiny 100%, but you increase
your odds greatly by identifying new trends, and making them workable.
  A decade ago, this argument would likely have been about whether or
not companies needed to be on the web, and how unsafe/costly/pointless
it was.  Oh, well...
