Hi Vito,
I needed to open the case of the media bay module. Mine contained a
TEAC 10x (Apple claimed 12x) CD-ROM drive whose form factor is very
close to the standard slim-line CD-ROM drives. In order to dissassemble
I needed to remove the four screws on the sides of the module and pull
the grey bottom case. The connector adaptor board fitted with the
CD-W28E.
Only one of the mounting screw holes was at the same position but
that's sufficient.
I don't know if the media bay case of the 6x and 8x units are different.

Tobias,
Did you have to disassemble the origninal cd rom drive and take the
innards of the teac drive and drop it into the old original mac cdrom
drive casing to make it work , or did it just fit in the bay right out
of the box.

Loosk like I learned the hard way, but it doesn't look like I will be
able to upgrade my CD-ROM drive with my current model. A website I
came across led me to believe that all the 1400 Drives could be
upgraded (including the 6x, 8x, and 12x), but this looks to not be
true. I have an 8x and purchased through Ebay a teac 8x CD-RW drive
to do the upgrade. As it turns out, my drive doesn't have to correct
adaptor.
Does anyone know how I could do this with my current drive. Looks
like if I want the 12x drive, I will have to spend $30 on ebay to buy
one whereas the teac only cost me $10. Wouldn't I only need the
connector itself? Is there anywhere I could buy one of these.
Yes, you only need the adapter of a 12x unit. Perhaps you could wait
for a defective one appearing on ebay.
I was hoping to get a CD-RW in this thing to be able to burn to data
discs when need be. Once I do get this up and running, what burning
apps would be rocommended?
I have been using Xcdroast as a frontend to cdrecord. However to work
with the 800x600 resolution one has to pass it a special command line
parameter and then the window is too big for the screen so one has to
move the window around to be able to access all buttons. But it is
working quite well.
You will also need the SCSI emulation kernel extension and to disable
the IDE CD-ROM driver.
In MacOS I have been using Charismac Discribe that is available as a
trial version whose trial period can be overriden by deleting a hidden
file in the System Folder. I prefer Discribe to Xcdroast because it is
very easy to create bootable HFS CDs with it what I need for the miboot
ISOs.
