I never tried to build a kernel using latest CVS before, not even with
the "old" tool chain. Therefore I guess current state of CVS is broken,
since the behavior is different from what I observed before I did update
my cvs snapshot.

I will try to build a kernel from an earlier point in time using the
native Sarge-based gcc on the PowerBook itself.

Hmm, I don't know if this is a requirement.
