Different binutils are essential.
The build of debian-kernel-2.4.27 with native toolchain on Sarge (older 
binutils than your version) is ready, but I didn't had a chance to test 
it yet.
I will upload it when I get home.

I don't think the ISO will yield to different results.
I just did it since I was modifying the miBoot floppy images anyway.
