Had the same a while ago, however, i found out that

set_out_channels(Mask_RGBA);
Iop::_validate(for_real);

did the job. No more concerns :)

Have you looked at the example plugins in the NDK?  There's 'AddChannels.cpp' 
which might show you what you need.
And don't forget that if you add a channel to the Iop's output then you need to 
fill it in in the engine() call.
