Hi Jack, I can't comment specifically about Nuke plug-ins, but our applications are built using Qt without any need for the Visual Studio Add-in. It also builds fine using the VS Express Edition. The add-in provides helpers to set up your project, configure custom build steps and some debugging tools, but you can achieve the same thing without it by using qmake to generate a Visual Studio project file.
