Yes of course there is - defaulting it on eliminated many, many color problems 
caused by negative numbers feeding into merge operations.  We (DD) identified 
the Grade node early on as a common cause of many of the negative value issues 
we were seeing once we started using floating-point color significantly in the 
late '90s.

If you don't agree with the default just change it to 'false' with a 
knobDefault.
