Hmmz I tried the exr writer plugin for cs5 but it seemed broken on anything above 5 layers.... do you know what plugin you guys are using? I wouldn't mind giving it a go.... but yea the ultimate solution would be a 32bit psd reader for nuke so there could be a consistency in one file and one format between matte painters and Compositors.
