I'm assuming if we're talking about changing the default in the read node behavior for Quicktime, this would only affect the 6.3 branch moving forward. I don't think 6.3 will even run on the older OS's to which you are referring -- they are most likely running Nuke 6.2v6. Again, changing defaults based on your specific color pipeline may still be the best approach for most.
