You could try the "from" operation(which is minus with the inputs
swapped) in a merge node to comp shadows from vray without
inverting/multiplying.


as a side note composting raw passes can lead to some edge artifacts as (i
believe) the renderer combines these passes on a per sample basis and
averages the samples to create the final image whereas in comp the
final anti aliased passes are combined on a one sample per pixel basis this
may create slight differences in edges.
