Hey Remco :)

Maybe something like this comes close to the way you say Smoke does it:

Take the background image and make it B/W (saturate to 0).
Use a merge node set to "Minus" and subtract it from the original.
Now you've got all the saturation from that image.

Make the foreground image B/W in the same way.
Then merge "Plus" the colours of the background to this.

Now that image you can use as the background1 input in a paintnode
and paint from it to the foreground.

Is that what you meant?
