I've seen that behaviour if the bbox going into the RotoPaint is large, and you have "clip to:" set to anything except "format" (it causes the node to freeze and use a huge amount of memory)

Same applies with the Roto node set to clipto:bbox etc.

Reported this the other day, but don't have a bug number yet..
