I think I read to quickly. My method would work as long as you're viewing the 
result of the comp. Viewing anywhere else in the tree would ofc give you full 
res.

I'm not sure why the default nuke proxy function isn't satisfactory to your 
needs. If I understand correctly what you want is to have eg. the background in 
low res to maintain interactivity while working with the foreground layers?

In that case I would simply put a write node with read enabled after the 
background part. Basically precomping that can be bypassed, and you're still at 
high res.
