Gents, I think you are looking at concusiness too statically.
We have free thinkers who can introspect and analyse the world (Or the world as we see it via our internal mental model). The end result from all the technical details about the brain is a dynamic model that is so much more than the sum of its parts. This is the focus of my research journey, and I seriously believe that even without the chemical part of brain physiology we can one day emulate a "Free thinking AGI with it's own mental model of the world based on available sensory inputs". This book is pretty interesting: Pocket Guide to Interpersonal Neurobiology: An Integrative Handbook of the Mind http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/039370713X/ I do not remember the source (Might have been Jeff's book on intelligence) but I read that the neocortex grew quite significantly after fire was discovered. I have domains in my model, and these domains integrate both vertically and horizontally depending of the function. It is my own estimation that we generate about 8 actions/reactions per second. Some of these possible actions bubble up to our attention as thoughts. Failed prediction plays a big part in this process, as some brains go into a very deep search or get caught in a loop and they try to predict all possible outcomes of certain scenarios and feel a sensation of "racing thoughts" which can be a considered a mental disorder in certain scenarios. Normally ideas arise by motivation related to feelings, if you want to become rich quick, you might spend time trying to come up with the next big app that will land you your own yacht, if you want to improve the planet you might sit around thinking about how to build a hyperloop or colonize Mars, if you love technology you might spend your time thinking out new things in the Tech space. My (lengthy point) is that people dream, and many day dream. Interesting here are the narcissistic people, who apparently spend a lot of time day dreaming of greatness and such. They spend a lot of their brain power on developing complex fantasy worlds that they basically apply "on top" of reality. A modification or addition of the mental model. Imagination is the key here, were do our imagination come from? What is the use for it? We have learnt to use imagination to activate certain feelings we want to have for enjoyment, thrill and such. Summary: Thoughts are "generated" about 8 times per second. Most of these thoughts are filtered out by what I call a domain Thoughts are analysed by the mental model If you want to test this just ask children to explain something they have never heard about or do not understand. They can give pretty lengthy and complex (and very entertaining) answers to some questions. This answer got messy, sorry for this brain dump… did not sleep much last night so I blame it on that and leave it there.
