So, Matthew, here is my experience installing nupic:
- Anaconda python installed in Red Hat and Mavericks
- Everything updated before installing (same version in both places)
- Installed cmake (through compiling in Red Hat)

In Mavericks it worked right away, in Red Hat I still couldn't make it work
(see history).
