Well explained Michael..Its not extremely intuitive that the neo-cortical sheet is actually regions that are inter connected in an hierarchy. Some regions receive direct input from sensors, while other regions may not be connected to sensors but are connected to regions forming a hierarchy of regions. The layers in the neo-cortex don't necessarily represent a hierarchy but represent a basic structure that is repeated across regions and each layer performs a specific action .
