Don't do any debugging on virtualized systems. You have no idea whether you're testing the virtualization or the driver in that case (especially when it comes to serial interfaces).
Also note that in most cases, vendors will do spent more effort on their Windows software than in the Linux equivalents. For monitoring the communications to the UPS, usually grabbing the output from a Windows control program gives more info.
