Lucene is often used to index mail archive.
Actually, it is used some. For example, Apache uses Lucene to search it's email archives through Eybrowse (http://eyebrowse.tigris.org/), e.g.:
http://nagoya.apache.org/eyebrowse/[EMAIL PROTECTED]
The Jive forum software (http://www.jivesoftware.com/) also uses Lucene, and can be used to archive mailing lists, as does Yazd (http://yazd.yasna.com/), etc.
