On my Debian Linux system, I specified the CLASSPATH and other paths in
the global PAM-profile /etc/environment:
JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.2_07
NUTCH_JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.2_07
CATALINA_HOME=/usr/share/tomcat4
CATALINA_BASE=/var/lib/tomcat4
CLASSPATH=.:/usr/local/j2sdk1.4.2_07
