Hi,
running ndfs on a single box installation makes not much sense,
exceptio you plan to use it for research.
However it is possible to run a name node and a data node on the same
box, also you can run several datanodes on the same box.
Rgearding your second question you may have to provide some more
information what is not working.
Im general you should may start with a 'crawl' command as described
in the nutch wiki and than verify that your tomcat/webapps/
nutchFolder/WEB-INF/classes/nutch-default.xml points to the correct
index folder.
