        AssignedTo: alan.maguire at sun.com
        ReportedBy: alan.maguire at sun.com

To confirm we are connected to a WLAN (as in the case of open authentication
WEP WLANs wifi will be reported to be connected even if the key is wrong), a
WLAN self-test was designed that sent, via libdlpi, a test frame from/to the
MAC address of the link being tested. The aim was to ensure that wifi
connectivity was truly established. It transpires that certain APs appear to
drop such frames before forwarding them back to the originator, so this does
not constitute a sufficiently reliable test. Attempts to compensate with
broadcast/multicast frames failed also, since these are dropped by hardware if
the broadcast originated from the adapter's MAC address (on the assumption such
frames are looped back in the originator's stack). Switching on physical
promiscuous mode to get around this fails since this results in the frame being
looped back, and this fails to distinguish between connected/disconnected
states.

The only tenable solution for now is to remove the wifi selftest.
