Hi, The init script uses the /lib/lsb/init-functions file which is part of the lsb-base package. It is likely that this wasn't installed. Probably this will need to be added as a dependency to the package as you suggest.
We consider i386 obsolete now, that's why there are no 32 bit packages for the newer distro versions. Two years ago in the debian squeeze era i386 was more common than it is today, so that is still provided. Of course it is still possible to compile and create packages for i386 and other architectures from the source if one wants to do so.
