You can supposedly put an Orinoco/Agere/Lucent card in hostap mode by setting a registry value, using the latest drivers for W2K. Haven't tried it, and haven't seen anywhere what the final result is (i.e. what you can control and how), though.

I think there are also some (commercial) software APs around (or used to be?), e.g. from Zoom or Compaq...
