The HostAP driver uses the "hostap" mode of the secondary firmware in the Prism-based cards. Orinoco cards don't have this in their firmware, and require a tertiary firmware to be downloaded into the card to run as an AP. That's what APs based on these cards do (the same is also possible on Prism-based cards).

The W2K driver supposedly has a registry setting that allows you to download the firmware file into the card and use it as an AP. Never tried it, put some people say it works. For other OSes, you would need to get the firmware file, and then modify the driver to support firmware-based AP mode. I think some people have worked on that, but I don't remember having heard about any positive results.

Why not use a Prism-based card? They're cheap, very common, and Intersil has committed to keep on supporting hostap mode.

Jacques.

Does anyone out there know if there exists a driver to make an orinoco (silver) card behave as an access point (managed mode not simply IBSS mode)?

I know that the hostAP driver on linux can put Prism based cards into a hostAP mode but the same thing should be possible with these orinoco cards since they are in a bunch of base stations - like apple's airport.

Got clues?
