You are so right!  I've also noticed the tendency from manufactureres
to making a product work primarily with other products of the same ilk.
 I've also noticed making new equipment less feature-rich in order to
get the customer to buy more stuff.

Examples:
1. The D-Link 900+ AP is supposed to be a great wireless repeater.  I
got one cheap.  I have never gotten it to recognize anything but
another D-Link.  I've been told it should.  An hour of tweaking for
each attempt...

2. I went out to buy a PCI adapter today.  The prices have come down
which is nice, but what I really wanted was one of the "old-time"
models that included a fully working PCMCIA card as part of the deal. 
That way you could use the card the way you wanted. 
 
BTW, I took the USB dongle over another wireless solution because it
seems cleanest for a small PC (front mounting, low power consumption,
no need for PCI slot, no sacrificing of sole PCMCIA or CF slot).
