The world's biggest hotspot
>From the beginning of 2004, the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos will
apparently become the biggest Wi-Fi hotspot in the U.S. -- possibly the
world. The city does not have complete DSL or cable coverage, so Cerritos
authorities gave Aiirnet Wirelss permission to use city property, including
lamp posts, traffic lights, and rooftops to mount antennas and offer
wireless broadband access to Cerritos' 50,000 residents, businesses, and
city govenment. The full service will go live on January 1 and will cover
all 8.6 square miles of outdoor Cerritos (initially, the wireless service
will be available only to outdoor users). Pricing for the service will be
similar to cable and DSL service.
