FYI As a former shareware developer I'd just like to point out that you
do have to pay for shareware. It's the try-before-you-buy model. Usually
you can try it for up to 30 days and usually it's not much, I only
charged $10 for SimplyEdit (Scriptable DOS editor of the late 80's made
by Bungee Software(TM)). Using it longer means you are infringing on the
copyright and liable for $150,000 per copy plus the cost of the product
and legal costs of the developer collecting your payment.

If you are looking for freeware or open source software then payment is
optional.

Unfortunately, I don't know of a good low cost scanner for Mac or
Windows, Kismet is good for Linux, but I've never been able to get it
working on a Mac (you have to use a special open source driver). I've
heard about someone charging $20 for an easy to install and scan
capable driver for the Orinoco 802.11b cards on Macintosh, but I haven't
had the time to check it out.
