VoWi-Fi - Proxim solution enables voice over Wi-Fi
February 09 12:55:00, 2004

SUNNYVALE, Calif.Proxim Corp. has released the details of its new ORiNOCO Wi-Fi
Suite, designed to support converged voice and data traffic across Wi-Fi
networks.

The suite was created as a component of the converged cellular, wireless LAN and
Internet Protocol telephony solution being developed jointly by Proxim, Avaya
Inc. and Motorola Inc., which was announced a year ago.

The ORiNOCO Switching System, included in the suite, was designed from the
beginning to support voice and data. No one has developed a [Wi-Fi] solution
with voice in mind, said Lynn Lucas, director of product marketing.

The solution includes features necessary for voice communications, including
fast roaming, seamless handover across networks, load balancing, advanced
quality of service and end-to-end security. It is targeted at large-scale
enterprises that want to offer integrated wireless voice and data access to
workers with unpredictable mobility patterns.

Proxim also introduced the ORiNOCO Access Point AP-4000, the highest performing
access point in its product line, according to Lucas. The access point is
targeted at smaller installations with data-oriented users that also want
limited voice support.
The AP-4000 is a tri-mode access point that supports 802.11 b, g, and a, to
interoperate with any existing Wi-Fi client. It also features proactive security
measures including rogue access point detection, secure management interfaces
and Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA), the industry standard for protecting data
transmitted via Wi-Fi.

The Wi-Fi Alliance separately announced last week that more than 175 products
from 40 manufacturers have received
WPA security certification since it was introduced last April. The alliance
began requiring WPA for all Wi-Fi certification last
September. The standard replaces Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) security.
