Hi Stephen,
not sure if this is what you wanted to know but...
most of the computer mags I get say its being adopted by walmart and
the DOD for the sole purpose of tagging inventory and increasing the
automation of the supply chain. Each of the aforementioned businesses
wants a percentage of the their suppliers to be RFID equiped/compliant
within a few years. This involved the use of passive RFID tags. There
are demo kits available from the main suppliers for this technology. Due
to the frequency needed for the tag activation/reception, the range need
to read a passive RFID tag is very short -- less than 50 ft?. The main
issues with its use is PRIVACY. One use of this is to tag prescription
drug bottles. Imagine if someone could read data from the bottle as you
walked by them on the street. There are already people developing signal
blocker to allow 'better' privacy.
