"The city government of Chicago took some small steps toward a city-wide
wireless Network earlier this week, the Chicago Tribune has reported.

According to that newspaper, a task force will study the best way to deploy a
city-wide wireless network. In addition, an alderman said he would propose a
law that would preserve the city's right to install such a network, even if the
state legislature approves a bill that would prevent municipal networks.

Low cost access was one of the chief reasons for looking into the municipal
network, according to one advocate."

"Burke said that a logical approach to deploying the network would be to use a
private company to install and manage the service. "
