In answer to your question: What is a node? - A node, I think, is a Wi-Fi hotspot. If you head on over to http://www.nodedb.com/ you'll see a bunch of different "nodes" of various sort of wireless Internet service available. Some are commercial, some are free. If I'm wrong, then I'm sure someone will jump in and correct me (and I'll be happy if they do).
As far as creating nodes goes, I'm in the early stages of planning to set one up for my own neighborhood park in Washington Heights in Manhattan. I've still got some ways to go as I have to fix up some of the computer refugees I've salvaged to make this work. :)
But from what I gathered in the NYCwireless meeting and then later browsing the web site, setting up a node yourself is actually relatively easy. Point your web browser to http://www.nycwireless.net/hotspot/ to get a wonderful introduction and guide to setting up your own public Wi-Fi hotspot "node."
