Larry,
Absolutely correct, the best money can buy and in fact, the best health
care. One of the reasons we spend more per capita is the cost of drugs. We
in the U.S. pay an inordinatley high share of the cost of R and D
[Larry Cerney] and TV and other advertising direct to the public which now
exceeds R&D. Don't you need the "Purple little pill"? Where is Nancy Ragan
with her "Just say no to drugs".
for new medicines. Then, once the new medicine is marketed overseas it is
sold for much less than here. Even with the lower prices many countries do
not honor patents and immediately start ripping off the drug in counterfeit
form. You don't see as much R and D in medical research overseas because of
the socialist structure,ie, there's not not as much profit opportunity.
[Larry Cerney] So, do I understand you then that the little old ladies and
men of America, as well as the rest of us working folk should be happy
subsidizing the drug companies HUGE profits? We should be happy that our
tax money is being spent to buy drugs for Medicare Part D at the full list
price, at whatever the Pharma's want to charge? What ever happened to
negotiating for a discount when the American people are going to buy a
bazillion "Purple little pills"?
The links you reference below are merely organizations touting socialized
medicine. We've already seen how well that works.
[Larry Cerney] Physicians for National Health Plan? They don't sound like
socialist to me. I like to call it Single Payer, just as our Federal
legislators and employees have. I also like to call it more efficient
health care. Yes, we have seen how well it works. Look at the Veterans
Health Administration which provides health care for a 2% overhead as
opposed to our multitude of insurance companies with their overheads near
20%.
Almost every day you can find an example in the newspapers of most every
major city of someone coming to the U.S. for an operation that they just
can't seem to get in their home country. Been to the hospital lately?
Notice any physicians that seem to not be Americans? I certainly have,
seems like about 30% or more of the physicians seem to be foreigners working
here. Know why they come here? The education and opportunity in the field
of medicine in the U.S. in unsurpassed.
[Larry Cerney] There is no doubt that medical care here is much more
abundant than in many parts of the world. I also recall people like
Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, and a little boy who lost both arms
as well as his whole family in Iraq as well as conjoined twins coming here
for care. They all could never have received the quality of medical care in
their countries that they could receive here. I also have heard of people
seeking medical care in Canada and Mexico because the health insurance
companies deigned the care or procedures they needed because it wouldn't be
"cost" effective. And yes, I was in the hospital in January and all the
doctors I saw were American. I also know that there are physicians from
America and other countries from around the world working with wonderful
groups like Doctors Without Borders caring for the sick and dieing in third
world countries and in countries ravaged by war. Not every Doc is in it
strictly to suck the last dollar out of the patient.
I don't wish to discuss this further in this forum where it is off
topic. Feel free to email me direct if you wish.
Respectfully,
Jim
[Larry Cerney] I'd love to continue this discussion off net at any time.
Thanks for letting me share my response.
Respectfully,
Larry
