Traveling with Emily Peyton on Saturday, we had 10 or more Giant Swallowtails in the Harlem Valley (East-central Dutchess County) & NW CT.
One fresh and two semi-worn individuals were at Nellie Hill Preserve in Dover Plains (on Bee Balm [Monarda]in bright flower), the rest were seen at a private residence in Sharon, plus 3-4 crossing roads at random as we drove. Giants may not be exactly common in this region yet, but they certainly are regular right now. Let's see what happens in 2013 if there's a warm early fall . Total of 16 species in two short periods in the field, pretty good numbers.
