The storm passing through the city today created some good-sized puddles at Floyd Bennett Field and delivered a fair assortment of shorebirds to the runways and parking lots. Included in the mix was a single Buff-breasted and Baird's Sandpiper. The Baird's and Buff-breasted weren't actually feeding in the puddles, but rather along the low weeds growing up through the cracks in the pavement near the puddles behind the orange barricades at the North 40 runway. Most of the birds there flushed when a man with a kite decided that the only available place at Floyd Bennett to fly it was next to the guy with the binoculars looking at birds (at only 1,358 acres the park is a little cramped). Later in the afternoon I ran into Rob Bates and we relocated the Buff-breasted in the small grass field across from Aviator Sports. Here's a link to a map - http://goo.gl/maps/sMDGz
I have the field noted as "Field preferred by Buff-breasted Sandpipers."
