Getting a late start (1330) on Sunday afternoon, Tom Moran and I ventured down
to Smith Point Co. Pk. in hope of seeing some of the nice birds that have been
recorded there recently. We left Riverhead with trepidation, due to forsaking
our loyalty to the N.Y.Giants. Our choice was made easier by the balmy weather,
favorable winds and the small amount of birding time each of us had logged in
the past 2 weeks.

On the ocean we had ~ 10 N.Gannets, but no loons or sea ducks.

In the camping area and the pines beyond ( for about a mile east on the "Burma
Rd.") we had many Yellow-rumped Warblers, ~ 25 Pine Siskins (FOS for me) and
small amounts of the expected species. We also had single flyovers by
N.Harrier, Merlin and Peregrine Falcon.
The ball field area was busy with birds, most of them YRWA, but also providing
2 "lifers" for Tom (Field & Clay-colored Sparrows), as well as as a single
Hermit Thrush.

The only animal of interest in the parking lot was an 8 point buck, seen
feeding with his harem and young.

In retrospect, we did pay a high price for the above...the Giants won, in an
exciting, come from behind win over their nemesis, the Washington Redskins,
27-23. In attendance, enjoying his 1st, live NFL game, was #3 grandson, Brendan
Connors - a day he'll always remember !

Cheers,
Bob
