Hi Everyone, I spent the morning birding Massapequa Preserve and Lake, and around Jones Beach - my main goal was to find some cool ducks. At Massapequa Lake saw lots of Mallards and Hooded Mergansers. (around 9am) I stopped at the dock at the end of Alhambra Road, saw lots of Brant in the bay and a single greater yellowlegs. At Jones Beach saw countless Brant everywhere. Not much going on by the Coast Guard Station (besides Brant) Saw a single female redwing blackbird, a mixed flock of goldfinches and juncos, as well as a hawk patrolling (sorry couldn't ID) in the median west of the Coast Guard Station. At Massapequa Preserve saw ~8 American Wigeons, 4 gadwall, and mallards at the pond by New Hampshire Ave. Also saw an unidentified duck - perhaps a female pintail? I have to compare my pics to a field guide. Several Carolina Wrens, Cardinals, Song Sparrows, downy woodpeckers, and a hermit thrush were present along the trail by this pond.
I'll post pics to my blog http://longislandbirding.blogspot.com/ tonight. Would be great if someone can help me ID the mystery duck/ possible Pintail : ) Good birding, Rob (Massapequa) -- NYSbirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/NYSbirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/NYSBirds-L 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/NYSB.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
