A walk along the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail in the Massapequa Preserve this morning, between Merrick Road and Sunrise Highway, produced little in the way of birds. Half-a dozen Yellow-rumped warblers were the sole representatives of that group. Also had a few Blue-gray gnatcatchers, Black-capped chickadees, a Tufted titmouse and one Northern flicker (female).
Had three species of swallows coursing back and forth over Mary's Lake - Barn, Tree, and Northern Rough-winged. Did see two classic harbingers of Spring: several mourning cloaks and a Spring azure blue butterfly which were most welcome sights.
