BEGIN TAPE

(+ Details requested by NYSARC)

Greetings. This is the New York Rare Bird Alert for Friday, September 14th
2018 at 9pm. The highlights of today's tape are MARBLED GODWIT, HUDSONIAN
GODWIT, BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER,
good numbers of LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS, YELLOW-BREASTED CHAT,
CONNECTICUT WARBLER, PHILADELPHIA VIREO, SUMMER TANAGER, BLUE GROSBEAK and
DICKCISSEL.

Though a week without any exceptional rarities, perhaps in part due to a
relatively unproductive stagnant weather system, the variety remained good
including among the shorebirds.

A MARBLED GODWIT still on the East Pond at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge last
Saturday was followed by one or two from Tuesday through today on the bar
off the Coast Guard Station at Jones Beach West End. HUDSONIAN GODWITS were
also seen at both of these sites, Jamaica Bay featuring three on the East
Pond last Saturday dropping to one by Thursday while at the West End two
were noted Monday and three reported Tuesday with two still there Thursday.
Three more HUDSONIANS were photographed at Nickerson Beach last Monday. An
AMERICAN GOLDEN-PLOVER and a BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPER were among the
shorebirds spotted at Heckscher State Park Thursday and still present there
today. Three more BUFF-BREASTEDS were on a sod farm south of Sound Avenue
and west of Doctor's Path in Riverhead last Saturday. Another briefly
visited Jamaica Bay's East Pond Sunday and one also appeared at Democrat
Point on Fire Island's western tip on Thursday. A BAIRD'S SANDPIPER was
noted Saturday on Miller Field on Staten Island where a peak of 6 WHIMBREL
were counted Monday this number dropping off to two Friday. Other WHIMBREL
included singles last Saturday at Breezy Point and Fort Tilden, Sunday at
Coney Island, Sunday and Monday at Plumb Beach and Tuesday at Floyd Bennett
Field. A LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER was reported again at Santapogue Creek in
West Babylon Saturday and other notable shorebirds all present at Jamaica
Bay included STILT, PECTORAL, WHITE-RUMPED and WESTERN SANDPIPERS. Also on
the East Pond last weekend was a SORA seen along the west side of the south
end and unexpectedly a SORA also showed up in Bryant Park in Manhattan
today a presumably storm related incursion of LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULLS
featured a high count of 90 at field 5 at Robert Moses State Park last
Monday that day also finding 61 at Smith Point County Park and 43 at Jones
Beach West End Field 2.

Numerous sightings of one or two CASPIAN TERNS this week came from such
sites as Breezy Point, Plumb Beach, Floyd Bennett Field, Jamaica Bay's East
Pond, Jones Beach West End and Cupsogue County Park and ROYAL TERNS also
remain along Long Island's south shore.

A PARASITIC JAEGER off Coney Island Beach on Monday was joined there by a
ROSEATE and three BLACK TERNS.

A RED-HEADED WOODPECKER visited Central Park’s Ramble on Tuesday.

Among the passerines two SUMMER TANAGERS were reported Wednesday. One
photographed at Battery Park in southern Manhattan the other in Clove Lakes
Park on Staten Island while two BLUE GROSBEAKS were mentioned from a
private site in Manhasset Sunday and another was noted at Fort Totten on
Wednesday. A DICKCISSEL was seen briefly at Brooklyn's Calvert Vaux Park
last Saturday. Early in the week single YELLOW-BREASTED CHATS were sighted
from Hempstead Lake State Park Sunday, Central Park Monday and Jones Beach
West End Tuesday. A CONNECTICUT WARBLER was found on Governors Island last
Saturday characteristically spotted walking on the ground. Another
CONNECTICUT reported at Jones Beach West End Tuesday was rather
unexpectedly noted foraging in Cherry Trees. A third CONNECTICUT WARBLER
was spotted in a swarm of birds occurring during the 9-11 Tribute in Light
Memorial Tuesday night into Wednesday morning in southern Manhattan. Among
the few thousand birds comprised of 33 identified species that were
swirling in the light beams were also a VIRGINIA RAIL, SPOTTED and SOLITARY
SANDPIPERS, GREEN HERON and a nice variety of warblers and other seasonal
migrants.

Among the passerines of note this week were OLIVE-SIDED, YELLOW-BELLIED and
ALDER FLYCATCHERS, a few PHILADELPHIA VIREOS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, PURPLE
FINCH and such warblers as TENNESSEE, CAPE MAY, PALM, BAY-BREASTED,
WORM-EATING, WILSON'S and a MOURNING in Central Park last Sunday.
