The 96th Smithtown Count (Suffolk County, Long Island) was held on Sunday, 
December 27 amid clear, calm, cool conditions with daytime temperatures in the 
upper 30's.  Seven parties and 26 participants tallied 110 species and 20,379 
individuals. This exceeds our 10 year average of 104 species.  The highlights 
of the count included:

36 Common Eider

78 Common Merganser

2   Ruddy Duck

19 Wild Turkey

2   Great Egret

6   Bald Eagle

4   Virginia Rail

1   Clapper Rail

1   Greater Yellowlegs

7   Purple Sandpiper

1   Glaucous Gull

7   Northern Saw-whet Owl

10 Common Raven

4   Horned Lark

1   Marsh Wren

1   House Wren

1   Ruby-crowned Kinglet

21 Eastern Bluebird

38 Snow Bunting

1   Purple Finch

1   Common Redpoll

Count week Black-headed Gull

Misses included: Northern Gannet, Harrier, Brown Thrasher, and Razorbill which 
has become reliable in recent years but was not observed this year.
