If that's the case then why are there any comments (let alone complaints) about the list content?! aa. Subscribe. bb. Set up a filter to put the messages in a folder. cc. Set up a filter to ignore any OT: posts. You're let with a list of fairly good content most of the time. > All I do is strongly recommend they > join NZPHPUG for all the reasons you mention. I am concerned though, > that they are not finding the group worth continuing with. Do they have better sources of help than the local list? Do they care about being seen to take part in the local scene? I agree that there isn't a great deal of useful On Topic discussion here. Steve is that because you teach them so well that they don't have anything they'd like to ask? To me, lists like this are a place to make and maintain contacts. They're especially important for people who aren't in study (hence not in the same community). Many people who lurk on these sorts of lists are small operators who like to be able to call on others for help. By 'help' I don't just mean "How do I do this in PHP v's ASP". I mean... 'hay I'm looking for a bit more work... hay I'm a bit over loaded I need some help to get a job finished... hey I'm having a problem with a customer and don't know how to approach it best..." sort of help. My 'small operator' I also mean you guys who are working 'in house' for a corporate or government agency. The guys at e2Media or Evolved have it easy. There's a group of you who you bounce off. I've worked for a govt agency and it's hard work when you're the only guy doing the programming. I remember the one time my boss did compliment what I was doing... it was when they'd decided to get a consulting firm in to look over our operations and realised that I was producing stuff really fast but just had way more to deal with than I should. The list is also important in helping people from OS make contacts so they can travel here. Other lists around the world are helpful for our students to make contact to get 'introductions' in other places. If we won't provide a vibrant platform for OS students then why the hell should US, UK, EU, etc provide a vibrant array of opportunity for our kids? > btw I just made this group into a Google App in Chrome I don't even understand what that means. Chrome is a web browser, no idea what a Google App even is. > which means I > can cancel my email digests altogether. That'll sort it. Digest is a dumb idea for a list like this. You can't view the posts in thread mode can you? You can't ignore users who you know aren't adding to the conversation. You can't ignore OT threads or threads that have reached enough of a conclusion for your interest.
