Lenny, currently the testing version of Debian, has a Xdebug package. License problems (apparently) prevented it from getting into Sarge or Etch: http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=php5-xdebug So, if you're comfortable with Debian, and you don't want to go to any trouble beyond an quick apt-get to install Xdebug, then you might want to look at running Lenny (or, dare I say it, Ubuntu, which also has php5-xdebug).
